Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
